Historiography of Environmental
History Workshop

As a facilitator of Sejarah Lintas Batas’ Environmental Historiography Workshop, I worked with emerging historians to develop new ways of researching and writing the environmental past. Rather than treating environmental history simply as the study of environmental problems, I trained participants to formulate historical questions that place human lives within larger ecological and planetary processes.

We worked with ideas such as planetary thinking, more-than-human perspectives, and non-human agency, while also examining how narrative choices shape environmental history. Participants experimented with declensionist narratives of environmental decline as well as more complex hybrid narratives that foreground entanglements among people, animals, plants, landscapes, technologies, markets, and political institutions. Through discussions of historiography, methodology, research questions, and narrative form, I encouraged participants to use environmental history as a way of rethinking historical agency and causation.
